Growth Hormone
Growth hormone (GH), including applications for stunted growth and chronic pain, has been a controversial issue for Utilization Managers for a number of years. GH is essential for body growth, modulating metabolic pathways, and assisting in neural, reproductive, immune, cardiovascular, and pulmonary functions. Numerous beneficial effects of growth hormone have led to its expanded therapeutic use.

The PRC for Growth Hormone lists FDA approved labeled indications, contraindications for GH therapy and specifies when GH is considered experimental, investigational or unproven.

Updated Guidelines For V-EEG
Video-electroencephalographic (V-EEG) monitoring is useful for some patients who present with unclear seizure symptoms. The information from this procedure is used to differentiate between epilepsy and psychogenic seizures when behavioral, clinical and EEG data are inconclusive.

V-EEG can also be used to identify a seizure focus when surgery is planned for intractable epilepsy. Therefore, the medical necessity of the V-EEG must be carefully evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

The PRC for V-EEG lists criteria for when the procedure may be considered medically necessary and when it should be forwarded to physician level review.
